Introduction

The Homolovi Chapter is headquartered near Winslow, AZ, surrounded by ancient reminders of the prehistoric peoples of the Southwest. See our web site at www.homolovi.com. We are also near the Historic Route 66, the highway that hosted millions of travelers to and from the West Coast.

Schedule of Events

Unless otherwise noted, programs are open to park visitors. Advance reservations are recommended for workshops as there is limited space.Programs are co-sponsored by Arizona State Parks, the Hopi Nation, and the Homol'ovi Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society. If you have questions or would like to make reservations, please contact Homol'ovi Ruins State Park at 928/289-4106

Most programs are free, although there is an entrance fee to Homol'ovi Ruins State Park.Cultural WorkshopsFree and open to the public. Registration required by calling the park. All workshops are scheduled for Saturdays from 10 am – 3 pm. The workshops are designed to include both lecture and hands-on activities. Some are tailored for a particular audience, but open to all.Speaker SeriesFree and open to the public. ATTENTION GROUPS VISITING HOMOL'OVI RUINS STATE PARK: We invite you to sponsor a program or special event! We maintain a list of speakers and artists. For $150 you can sponsor a program of your choice at the time of your choice! The fee pays the speaker fee and the cost for advertising the event. These events are held at Homolovi Ruins State Park and are open to all visitors, but you are listed as the sponsor of the activity. Park entrance fees are required for participation in events within the park other than our monthly Archaeology Society meetings. (If you are staying in the campground there is no additional entrance fee)

NOTICE CONCERNING FUN RUNS: Due to problems with cracks in the road, we are now doing cross-country runs over rough, natural terrain.

TOURS OF THE HOPI MESAS. We are working with Arizona State Parks and with the Hopi Tribe to develop tours of the Hopi Mesas. These tours will originate at Homol'ovi Ruins State Park near Winslow, Arizona. We will have both guides (they ride with you in your vehicle) and tours with transporation provided (vans or a bus).

Saturday April 7 10am-3pm Meet at Homol'ovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center, Winslow, AZ Hopi Ethnobotony and Medicinal Plants Cultural Workshop by Micah Lomaomvaya, Max Taylor and Donald Dawahongnewa. Our region contains a rich variety of plant life. Learn how Hopi people name, identify, harvest, and use various plant materials.

Saturday, April 14,10am-3pm Meet at Homol'ovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center, Winslow, AZ Hopi Early Crop Planting Cultural Workshop by Leigh Kuwanwisiwma April is the season in which several crops are beginning to be planted in the Hopi world. Join various Hopi gardeners as they explain what these early crops are, their methods in preparing fields or gardening plots, and planting methods. You will then get your hands dirty as you help to plant the Homolovi terrace garden. Wear comfortable shoes and work clothes.

Thursday, April 19, 2007, 7pm, Homol'ovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center, Winslow, AZ Meeting of the Homol'ovi Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society and Speaker Series presentation. Homol'ovi Cultural Horizon by Leigh KuwanwisiwmaA presentation of the connection of Homol'ovi to the rest of the Hopi cultural sites found throughout the Southwest developed by the Hisatsinom, people of long ago.

Saturday, May 5th,10am-3pm Meet at Homol'ovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center, Winslow, AZ Hopi Corn: Gender Roles, Production and Maintenance Cultural Workshop by Leigh Kuwanwisiwma and Maxine Wadsworth Corn is not only a staple of agricultural production for the Hopi, but is considered the spiritual mother and food of the Hopi. You will learn not only the pragmatic elements of the Hopi dry farming method, but how the corn field is cared for, then harvested, stored, cooked, preserved and used. Furthermore how the Hopi culture prescribe these tasks by gender.

Summer Artist Demonstrations: Saturdays June 2 through August 25 from 10 am - 3 pm Meet and visit with Hopi artists as they demonstrate their craft and speak on the materials, process and styles that they have mastered in their lives as artists. -Any interested Hopi artists please contact Susan Secakuku at (928) 737-2510. There is a small honorarium for the artist, plus they are able to sell their wares, with a small percentage of those sales going to the gift shop. June-early July, 2007: Archaeologists will be at work within Homolovi Ruins State Park

Summer Archaeology at Homolovi: The University of Michigan Anthropology and Archaeology Department received a grant from the National Science Foundation to conduct an archaeological dig at Creswell Pueblo, an archaeological site within Homol'ovi Ruins State Park. This six week program is for undergraduate college students who come from all over the country to participate in this endeavor.

We have reserved five (5) Tuesdays during their visit, exclusively for members of the Hopi community to visit the site to learn more about archaeology. There are only 10 spaces per day. The visit begins at the park at 9:00 am and ends about 2:00 pm. Participants should bring their own lunch and will have to provide their own transportation. Registration is required, but is free, by calling the park. The following Tuesdays are reserved for this program: June 12, 19 and 26, plus July 3 and 12

Saturday, June 9th,10am-3pm  -Meet at Homol'ovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center, Winslow, AZ Hopi Ethnoarchaeology: A New Foundation Cultural Workshop by Lyle Balenquah, Micah Loma’omvaya and Lloyd Masayumptewa The sciences of archaeology and anthropology have studied Hopi culture for many years. Learn how the Hopi Tribe has utilized this science to benefit their community, by training Hopi scientists and work by working to become partners, instead of just subjects, in all projects.

Suvoyuki Day, Saturday, July 7, 2007 (Plus a Friday Night program) A “Joint Effort” of the Hopi people, Arizona State Parks, and the Homolovi Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society. This is the open house for the park, which helps celebrate all the partners who have helped to protect and save Homol'ovi from destruction. All activities take place at the park. The event begins at 7pm Friday night with a program about the important role of corn in Hopi culture. After the program we will fill a hot pit with corn to roast overnight. On Saturday, the day begins with a morning run (2 or 5 mile) at sunrise. Following the run we will open the corn pit and feast on this traditional treat. Throughout the day, there are Hopi artist demonstrations, traditional food demonstrations, and lectures from Hopi people and archaeologists interpreting the site. July 14 or 21 DATE IS TENTATIVE Check with the park for final date.-Meet at Homol'ovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center, Winslow, AZHopi Language, Songs and Games for Children Cultural Workshop by Anita Poleahla and Ferrell Secakuku Join us for a day of stories about Hopi legends, learn a little of the Hopi language and some traditional games that have entertained the Hopi children for centuries. This workshop is geared to children, but anyone is welcome.

Saturday, August 11th DATE IS TENTATIVE 10am-3pm Meet at Homol'ovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center Native American Concerns in the Classroom Cultural Workshop by Debbie Onsae and TBA Navajo Tailored for elementary school teachers and youth leaders who teach Native American children, this workshop will address the cultural concerns of the Hopi and Navajo cultures of which teachers should be aware and that might conflict with existing educational curriculum. Examples of inappropriate and appropriate educational materials, actvities and subjects will be presented.

September 15th- Tentative date! 10am-3pm  -Meet at Homol'ovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center, Winslow, AZ Identifying Authentic Hopi Art Cultural Workshop by Alph Secakuku This workshop is for the novice buyer interested in purchasing Hopi art. The lecture will help the audience better understand the production and materials found in authentic Hopi art, to assist in helping to identify the difference between authentic and fake or non-Hopi made art.

Several Hopi clan stories attribute their departure from Homol'ovi to the Hopi mesas to the vast amount of mosquitos that lived near Paayu, the Little Colorado River. This presentation will speak of that story. Thursday, October 18 7pm, Homolovi Ruins State Park Visitor Center, Winslow, AZ Meeting of the Homol'ovi Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society and Speaker Series presentation. Hopi Cultural Research Projects: A Review by Leigh Kuwanwisiwma The Hopi Tribe’s Cultural Preservation Office has various research projects underway that help to interpret, document and protect Hopi culture. Director Leigh Kuwanwisiwma will provide a summary of the research projects in which the Hopi Tribe is engaged.
