DESERT FOOTHILLS CHAPTER HISTORY
AAS - DESERT FOOTHILLS CHAPTER NEWS
JUNE, 2008
Increase in Membership Dues:
An increase in membership dues was voted upon at the recent AAS State Meeting in Flagstaff. The majority vote was that membership dues would increase by $5 effective with membership year 2009. Individual membership will increase from $30 to $35, and a family membership from $35 to $40. Other classes of membership within the chapter will remain the same.
Early membership renewal forms at the new rates will be available at our September meeting (for calendar year 2009).
Summer Events:
The Homol'ovi Chapter of AAS will hold a series of workshops each weekend in June - this is co-operative effort between the Homol'ovi Chapter, Arizona State Parks, the Hopi Tribe and Northland Pioneer College. Workshops will discuss Hopi Culture, cultural resources management and cooperative projects with the Hopi tribe. In addition field trips will be held. A trip to the Hopi Mesa with a second field trip to Chavez Pass and Rock Art Ranch have been planned. Log on to www.homolovi.com and click on "Schedule of Events" for full details and to make reservations.
Fall State Meeting:
Desert Foothills will host the fall State Meeting the weekend of October 4th and 5th. The board will be meeting throughout the summer months to plan this event but mark your calendars now and plan to attend!
MAY, 2008
Chapter Meeting, Wednesday, May 14th, 2008:
Richard Lange of the Arizona State Museum, has done extensive fieldwork at the cliff dwellings at Sierra Ancha, and will give a presentation of his work. This will be our last meeting of the season and all members are encouraged to bring a contribution to this evening's "Dessert Potluck". Each contribution should feed approx. 8 people.
Refreshments at 7pm, meeting begins at 7:30am at the Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church, 6502 E. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek, AZ 85331 (west of Dairy Queen).
< br>
Increase in Membership Dues at the State Level vote:
A $5.00 increase in fees was discussed at the Winter State Meeting in January of this year. The State has been operating in the red for several years, and now together with the increasing cost of publications, printing and postage the financial woes only continue to increase. The Chapter will take a membership vote for or against the increase at the Chapter meeting on Wednesday, May 14th and then take the results of that vote to the Spring State Meeting at the end of this month.

Joint Field Trip to Little Petroglyph Canyon, California, Saturday, October 18, 2008:
We will take a field trip together with members from the Aqua Fria Chapter on Saturday, October 18, 2008, to view the petroglyphs of Little Petroglyph Canyon located on the China Lake Naval Weapons Center, Ridgecrest, California. This particular trip is limited to 10 people from each chapter, since only a tour size of 20 visitors is allowed. The DFC board made the decision to make this field trip a fund-raiser and therefore the cost per participant will be $35. Please note that the canyon is rough terrain with a high degree of hiking difficulty. Be realistic about your physical ability since if you are unable to continue the hike at any time, the entire group has to return to the parking area together with the command-approved escorts and the tour is then canceled. This trip will involve at least 2 overnight stays (Friday and Saturday). A list of approved Ridgecrest hotels/motels will be made available to each participant at a later date. We will also furnish information regarding other attractions in the Ridgecrest area.
A sign-up sheet will be available at the Chapter meeting on a first-come, first served basis. Be prepared to enter your name, telephone number, date of birth, birthplace and social security number. There can be no substitutions if you change your mind during the summer months! If this field trip is a success, we can repeat it at a later date, possibly in the spring of 2009.

Desert Foothills Chapter News - October 4, 2006
Evelyn Billo, Flagstaff resident and area rock art expert will be at the Scottsdale First Assembly Dream Center, 28700 N. Pima Road, on Wednesday, November 8, at 7:30 PM to discuss the varied and extensive rock art of the Colorado Plateau. The title of her talk will be, Greater Colorado Plateau Rock Art: It?s Place in the World. This talk is sponsored by the Desert Foothills Chapter (DFC) of the Arizona Archaeological Society (AAS) and is free to the public.
Although some southwestern rock art images are unique to the region, Evelyn states, ?Many similarities exist among rock art sites around the world. I will be showing that some representational elements such as bears, lions, horses, owls, handprints, and abstract imagery such as
geometric patterns exist throughout space and time.? She will contrast slides of Colorado Plateau rock art with examples of the rock art of Paleolithic and Bronze Age sites in Western Europe, Africa, Australia, India, China, and Rapa Nui.
Evelyn is the founder and CEO of Rupestrian CyberServices, which provides technical services to rock art managers or anyone who needs expertise in digitally archiving research materials, database creation or production of multimedia projects for education or management. She is an AAS Certified Rock Art Site Recorder with twenty years of experience. Her volunteer work recording rock art has taken her around the world and she is an activist in the preservation and protection of rock art sites. Along with her husband, Robert Mark, she was the American Rock Art Research Association?s (ARARA) 1999 winner of the Conservation and Preservation award.
She and her husband recently completed an interactive CD for the Deer Valley Rock Art Center in Phoenix. They have photographed and assessed the condition of rock art within Carlsbad National Park and Canyon De Chelly National Monument. They provided image enhancement assistance to Jean Clottes, the prehistorian in charge of the Chauvet Cave Project in France and have mapped and developed photographic databases for many sites in the southwest. Their current project involves working towards the
nomination of Picture Canyon to the National Register of Historic Places. Picture Canyon is a ?hidden treasure? located near Flagstaff that includes over 700 rock art elements, including unique water birds and complex geometric designs.
The DFC offers monthly speakers on various archaeological topics.
A certification program is available for members to learn archaeology techniques and research methods as well as field school opportunities. Monthly day hikes and weekend trips to archaeological sites are also offered. Please contact DFC President Judy Rounds at 602.363.6985 for more information. The AAS website, www.azarchsoc.org has membership forms and information on the activities of all the AAS chapters.

Geoglyphs: The Orphans of Rock Art
ARCHAEOASTRONOMER IS FIRST TO SPEAK AT NEW MEETING SITE
Scottsdale, AZ, August 1, 2006 - The Desert Foothills Chapter (DFC) of the Arizona Archaeological Society (AAS) is pleased and excited to welcome its members back on Wednesday, September 13th, at 7:30 P.M. for a stimulating speaker and a beautiful new meeting facility.
The new meeting place will be the Scottsdale First Assembly Dream Center, 28700 N. Pima Road in Scottsdale, the NW corner of Pima and Dynamite.
The September speaker is archaeoastronomer John Fountain, from Tucson, Arizona. His talk is titled Geoglyphs: The Orphans of Rock Art. This hour long talk is free and the public is invited to attend.
John William Fountain
John Fountain began his career as an astronomer who did frequent contract work with NASA. From the University of Arizona, he helped analyze the first spacecraft pictures of the moon during the Ranger Project and co-authored the Consolidated Lunar Atlas, used by the Apollo astronauts. He also co-discovered two of Saturn?s satellites and supervised the production of images of Jupiter and Saturn, delivered from
the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft. He also participated in Mariner and Voyager missions.
His experience with atmospheric aerial imaging led John to notice and became interested in geoglyphs, a form of rock art where large portions of the earth?s surface are scraped away to form animal or human shapes. Readily seen from aerial photos, these geoglyphs may incorporate the use of piled up rocks and also form linear, circular or abstract shapes. Outside the famous Nazca Lines of Peru, these geoglyphs are relatively unknown and unstudied. Hundreds of geoglyphs can be found along the lower Colorado and Gila Rivers in Arizona. Other unusual features seen in aerial photos are called summit paths. These three foot wide paths go straight up the sides of hills. Their purpose may be related to rock art and geoglyphs, which are typically found near these sites. John will be showing the chapter digital photos of both of these constructs and discussing their possible purpose and use. In addition, he will explore ways that these features might be preserved until they can be fully studied and documented.
For the past fifteen years, John has been investigating astronomical references in the rock art of Native Americans. His work has documented many rock art solstice and equinox markers and he has established a database of these solar markers, which he found are surprisingly common and widespread throughout North America. He has led archaeoastronomy tours for Crow Canyon Archaeological Center and was featured in a KUAT-TV production of The Desert Speaks ? Shadows of the Ancients. He has published 35 scientific papers. Recently, he co-edited the book, Current Studies in
Archaeoastronomy: Conversations Across Time and Space, published in 2005 by the
Carolina Academic Press. John will bring several copies of his book to the talk, which will be on sale for $55.00, ten dollars off the list price. He will be available to sign them after the meeting.
Desert Foothills Chapter News - April 2006
We had a very interesting chapter meeting in April. Dr. Brenda Baker, from the ASU SHESC gave our members a lively talk, complete with great pictures about her ?misadventures? in the Sudan. Problems with an unreliable Land rover forced her and her crew to spend many nights in some out of the way places. In fact, in the five weeks she was gone they were only able to excavate for four days. But the last day of excavating made the whole trip worthwhile when she discovered a point imbedded in the sternum of a male skeleton. There are only two years left before the area where they are excavating in the Sudan will be covered with water from the new dam. Dr. Baker has promised that she will come back and tell us how the work is progressing and to share more photos and stories.
Our chapter is planning its own adventure in southern Arizona for a weekend in early October. Brenda Poulos is working on a three day trip that would begin on Friday afternoon with a visit to San Xavier Del Bac. Friday night would be spent in Tubac, with a group dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Saturday is reserved for a trip to Tumacacori, where chapter members will be given a private tour of the mission and surrounding sites. Dinner that evening would be at one of Tubac?s many quaint restaurants. For Sunday, a trip is planned to the Baby Jesus Petroglyph Site and the nearby Romero Ruins. The Baby Jesus Site is one of the largest petroglyph sites in southern Arizona. Firm dates and a sign-up sheet will be available at the May chapter meeting. This should be a wonderful trip with beautiful fall weather and we hope you can join us.
Our DFC hats are in and they look great! They are beige colored with a DFC logo and they cost $15.00. They will be on sale at our May 10th meeting. Don?t wait because this will be the last chance until our September meeting to purchase one. Keep cool this summer in a stylish DFC hat and t-shirt!
Glen is planning a hike to the Eagletail Mountains for May. This wilderness area is located about halfway between Tonopah and Quartzsite. More information and specific times and dates will be available at the chapter meeting.
Our speaker this month has a most interesting title for his talk: To Kill a Witch: Witches, Cannibals and Anthropologists in American Southwest. Dr. J. Andrew Darling, of the Gila River Indian Community will talk about witchcraft being a possible alternative to what is commonly believed to be cannibalism among prehistoric Native Americans. His views on this controversial topic should prove to be informative and entertaining. The meeting will start at 7:30 PM at the Cave Creek Town Hall. Please contact Judy Rounds, chapter President, at 602-363-6985 for information on chapter activities or events.
Don?t forget that our upcoming May meeting on the 10th ends with our annual dessert potluck. Please bring a favorite dessert or treat that can be shared with our chapter members. Finger desserts are best as there will be no forks. The DFC would like to welcome all of our newest members and hopes that everyone will plan to stay after the regular meeting for some ?goodies? and a chance to enjoy some DFC camaraderie.

Desert Foothills Chapter News - March 2006
As March unfolds, activities for Archaeology and Heritage Awareness
Month are everywhere. Don't miss the month-long exhibit at the Desert
Foothills Library, 38443 North Schoolhouse Road in Cave Creek. Paddi
Mozilo has created this exhibit about local archaeology.
For those interested in a strenuous hike to the Elephant Mountain
hilltop fort site in the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, meet
Chapter President Judy Rounds and park supervisor John Gunn at the ranch
entrance at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 25. This is a complete hike of
about six hours, but some may choose to go part way. For more
information, contact Judy at 602-363-6985, or attend the March 8 Chapter
meeting at the Cave Creek Town Hall, 37622 N. Cave Creek Road.
At that meeting we'll hear Dr. Curtis Marean of the School of Human
Origins and Social Change at ASU. His program, "Archaeological Research
at Mossel Bay, South Africa," concerns large cave sites along coastal
cliffs of the Indian Ocean. Dr. Marean is studying environmental change
from 400,000 to 300,000 years ago and its effect on human behavior. The
meeting begins at 7:30.
A geology workshop will take place on Saturday, March 11, beginning at 9
a.m. at the Cave Creek Town Hall. Instructor Tom McGuire will begin with
a classroom lecture and discussion, followed by an afternoon in the
field at the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. Enrollment is $10.
Flintknapping taught by Mick Robins will take place March 14 and 16,
Tuesday and Thursday, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the community room at the
Cave Creek Town Hall. Wear old clothes and bring leather gloves and a
leather pad for protection. Enrollment is $10. For information about
both workshops, contact Alan Troxel, 623-434-1029, or
alantroxel@yahoo.com.
The pottery technology workshop taught by Charlie Gilbert and Glen
Dotson came to a successful conclusion on February 18 at the wash below
Judy Rounds' house in Carefree. Charlie's pottery-protection rituals
were apparently effective as there was very little breakage. We thank
Judy and Rand for hosting the event, and Charlie, Glen and several
helpers for setting up and dismantling the fires.
The Chapter's winter outreach event was held February 11 in the Pinnacle
Presbyterian Church. Our speakers, Mark Hackbarth and Robert Serocki,
persevered through some equipment problems. Chapter members mounted
several exhibits that attracted the approximately 90 visitors.
At our February meeting, Charlie Gilbert gave well-deserved recognition
to Brenda Poulos with a Silver Trowel Award. Brenda was Chapter
president for four years, while making other contributions in many areas
such as the Q Ranch Project. We went on to hear Steven Schmich of ASU
give us a fascinating glimpse of the ice age in the Northern Hemisphere,
and in the countryside near Valencia, Spain.
After March, only two more programs remain in the Chapter winter/spring
season. On April 12, Dr. Brenda Baker of ASU will present, "Salvage
Archaeology along the Nile," concerning the Merowe Dam Project in Sudan.
On May 10, Dr. J. Andrew Darling of the Gila River Indian Community will
enter one of archaeology's hottest controversies with, "To Kill a Witch:
Witches, Cannibals, and Anthropologists in the American Southwest."

Desert Foothills Chapter News - January 2006
At our first meeting of the New Year, on Wednesday, January 11, we will
welcome Gayle and William Hartmann of the University of Arizona,
speaking on "New Information on the Coronado Expedition." Gayle and Bill
gave us the last update on their Coronado Expedition research some years
ago, and it will be exciting to see them again. Join us at the Cave
Creek Town Hall, 37622 N. Cave Creek Road, at 7:30 p.m.
Please pay your dues, if you have not renewed for 2006. The 2005
memberships actually expired at the end of the year, and those who do
not renew during the grace period in January will soon be removed from
the Petroglyph mailing list. Think of what you could miss! Pay Gerry
Haase, membership chair, at the January meeting, or contact her at
480-585-5576 or GAHaase@yahoo.com. She has pre-printed renewal forms
ready for you.
Our big Christmas potluck was a wonderful feast, thanks to many members
who brought delicious food. Our particular thanks go to the officers and
volunteers who did so much work and planning, including Mary Marshall,
hospitality chair; Brenda Poulos, outgoing President; Judy Rounds,
incoming President; plus all those who helped with the hard work at the
church hall.
We also thank Joe Vogel of Prescott for judging the photo contest. Joe
is a photographer and aerial photo specialist who made us want to know
more about him and his field. Eight members won nine prizes in the three
categories of the contest. We hope the contest will become an annual
event.
The Phoenix Chapter has invited Desert Foothills members to participate
in their field trip to Sears Point on January 14 and 15. Participants
may choose a day hike or camp out for the weekend. This is a super site
on the Gila River near Gila Bend which includes prehistoric and historic
petroglyphs and some ancient trails. Contact Evelyn Partridge,
480-367-9465. Also see the Phoenix Chapter news.
The Chapter is planning an outreach event on Saturday, February 11 at
the Pinnacle Peak Presbyterian Church. Mark Hackbarth is the featured
speaker, and we hope also to offer a hike in the McDowell Mountains.
Watch for a flyer and an announcement at the upcoming Chapter meeting.
Information on numerous upcoming events and classes will be available at
the January 11 meeting. Contact Alan Troxel about a geology workshop,
tentatively in February; and a certification course, Historical
Archaeology taught by John Hohmann, tentatively in March. For
Archaeology Month in March, Judy Rounds and Rand Losey are planning
another Spur Cross Ranch hike. And Rob Jones is determining the interest
for a southern Arizona field trip. See all this and more at the next
meeting.

I will be showing that some representational elements such as bears, lions, horses, owls, handprints, and abstract imagery such as geometric patterns exist throughout space and time.?
Their current project involves working towards the nomination of Picture Canyon to the National Register of Historic Places.

He also co-discovered two of Saturn?s satellites and supervised the production of images of Jupiter and Saturn, delivered from the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft.
Recently, he co-edited the book, Current Studies in Archaeoastronomy: Conversations Across Time and Space, published in 2005 by the Carolina Academic Press.

As March unfolds, activities for Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month are everywhere. Don't miss the month-long exhibit at the Desert Foothills Library, 38443 North Schoolhouse Road in Cave Creek. Paddi Mozilo has created this exhibit about local archaeology.
For those interested in a strenuous hike to the Elephant Mountain hilltop fort site in the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, meet Chapter President Judy Rounds and park supervisor John Gunn at the ranch entrance at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 25. This is a complete hike of about six hours, but some may choose to go part way. For more information, contact Judy at 602-363-6985, or attend the March 8 Chapter meeting at the Cave Creek Town Hall, 37622 N. Cave Creek Road.
At that meeting we'll hear Dr. Curtis Marean of the School of Human Origins and Social Change at ASU. His program, "Archaeological Research at Mossel Bay, South Africa," concerns large cave sites along coastal cliffs of the Indian Ocean. Dr. Marean is studying environmental change from 400,000 to 300,000 years ago and its effect on human behavior. The meeting begins at 7:30.
A geology workshop will take place on Saturday, March 11, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Cave Creek Town Hall. Instructor Tom McGuire will begin with a classroom lecture and discussion, followed by an afternoon in the field at the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. Enrollment is $10.
Flintknapping taught by Mick Robins will take place March 14 and 16, Tuesday and Thursday, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the community room at the Cave Creek Town Hall. Wear old clothes and bring leather gloves and a leather pad for protection. Enrollment is $10. For information about both workshops, contact Alan Troxel, 623-434-1029, or alantroxel@yahoo.com.
The pottery technology workshop taught by Charlie Gilbert and Glen Dotson came to a successful conclusion on February 18 at the wash below Judy Rounds' house in Carefree. Charlie's pottery-protection rituals
were apparently effective as there was very little breakage. We thank Judy and Rand for hosting the event, and Charlie, Glen and several helpers for setting up and dismantling the fires.
The Chapter's winter outreach event was held February 11 in the Pinnacle Presbyterian Church. Our speakers, Mark Hackbarth and Robert Serocki, persevered through some equipment problems. Chapter members mounted several exhibits that attracted the approximately 90 visitors.
At our February meeting, Charlie Gilbert gave well-deserved recognition to Brenda Poulos with a Silver Trowel Award. Brenda was Chapter president for four years, while making other contributions in many areas such as the Q Ranch Project. We went on to hear Steven Schmich of ASU give us a fascinating glimpse of the ice age in the Northern Hemisphere, and in the countryside near Valencia, Spain.
After March, only two more programs remain in the Chapter winter/spring season. On April 12, Dr. Brenda Baker of ASU will present, "Salvage Archaeology along the Nile," concerning the Merowe Dam Project in Sudan. On May 10, Dr. J. Andrew Darling of the Gila River Indian Community will enter one of archaeology's hottest controversies with, "To Kill a Witch: Witches, Cannibals, and Anthropologists in the American Southwest."
